Is grayscale the same as black and white?

Is a grayscale image smaller than a colour one?
A true grayscale file stores one value per pixel instead of three, so it can be smaller, but PNG and JPG files exported by browsers are usually saved as colour images that simply look grey. Do not expect a big drop in file size. If size matters, run the result through an image compressor as well.
